After over six innings of shutout baseball, the Atlanta Braves’ Brian McCann was simply looking to put the ball in play.
He wound up delivering the biggest hit of the game, as his bases-clearing 3-run double in the 7th inning off Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Thornton was able to lift the National League to a 3-1 win over the American League on Tuesday evening in the 80th All-Star Game from Angels Stadium.
The win also couldn’t have been preserved without some great defense, as Chicago Cubs’ outfielder Marlon Byrd saved the day in the 9th inning with a brilliant throw to nail David Ortiz at 2nd base.
The American League’s only run of the game came unearned, as Robinson Cano hit a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning to score Evan Longoria from 3rd base. (Hong-Chih Kuo’s throwing error led to the run)
After that play, Los Angeles Dodgers’ closer Jonathan Broxton didn’t allow anymore baserunners as he retired the final two batters to give the NL their first win since 1996.
McCann becomes the first catcher since Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1997 to win All-Star Game MVP honors & the first Atlanta Braves player to do so since Fred McGriff in 1994.
