The man who went by the nickname of “The Big Hurt” is officially calling it a career later this morning at U.S. Cellular Field, as 5-time All-Star Frank Thomas will end 19 years in the big leagues.

Thomas spent 16 of his 19 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, where he made 5 All-Star selections, won 4 Silver Slugger awards, was twice named American League MVP (1993 & 1994) and was part of the 2005 team that won the World Series.

His worst season came in 2001 after appearing in just a career-low 20 games after learning of the death of his father.

Frank’s tenure with the White Sox ended in December of 2005, but he still holds several team records in runs scored, home runs, doubles, runs batted in, extra base hits, walks, total bases, slugging percentage & on-base percentage.

Thomas enjoyed some elite company on June 28th, 2007 as he hit his 500th career homer as a Toronto Blue Jay, which made him the 21st player in league history to reach that mark. Just 11 days prior to that, he hit his 244th homer as a designated hitter, which broke the all-time mark previously held by Edgar Martinez.

His final game was on August 29th, 2008 as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored during Oakland’s 12-2 loss to Minnesota.
