Mattie T’s Game 2 Recap of the 2009 World Series
Written by The Go-To-Man Mattie T. on October 30, 2009
When Matt Stairs hit an early RBI single off A.J. Burnett in the 2nd inning, the Yankees had to find a way to rally in order to avoid facing an 0-2 deficit.
They did just that, as Mark Teixiera hit a game-tying 4th inning HR off Pedro Martinez while Hideki Matsui’s go-ahead shot in the 6th gave New York enough fuel to tie the series up.
Jorge Posada added a key 7th inning RBI single for a huge insurance run, as the Yankees’ pitching stuff shut down Philadelphia for the game’s final 7 innings.
A lot of that had to do with the performance from A.J. Burnett, who pitched 7 strong innings while allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and walked two while striking out nine.
Mariano Rivera worked 2 innings for the Yankees out of the bullpen & earned the save.
The series will now shift to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for Game 3 on Saturday, as southpaws Andy Petttite & Cole Hamels will hook up against eachother.
Pettitte has allowed just 5 earned runs in his 18+ innings of work this postseason & has a 0.75 ERA in 2 career starts at Citizens Bank Park.
Hamels has failed to pitch into the 6th inning this postseason & is 0-1 in 2 career starts against the Yankees with a 2.77 ERA.
