Mattie T’s Game 1 Recap of the 2009 World Series

Out of all the weapons in Philadelphia’s lineup, Chase Utley is the guy that seems to get them going.
After Raul Ibanez squandered a bases-loaded chance in the 1st, Utley’s solo homer in the 3rd off C.C. Sabathia gave the Phillies the lead for good.
Utley added another solo shot in the 6th, while Ibanez made up for his bases-loaded groundout with a 2-run single in the 8th.
The Phillies then got two big 9th inning runs off the Yankee bullpen, as Shane Victorino’s RBI single & Ryan Howard’s RBI double gave them a comfortable six-run lead & quieted the Yankee Stadium crowd.
After Derek Jeter’s 3rd inning double, the Yankees did not put another runner into scoring position until the 9th inning, which is when Mark Texieira hit an RBI groundout to end the shutout, as Philadelphia took Game 1 by a final score of 6-1.
Everyone in the Phillies’ lineup got at least one hit with the exception of Ben Francisco & Pedro Feliz, as the 7 & 8 batters went a combined 0-for-7.
Derek Jeter went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Yankees, but Alex Rodriguez & Mark Teixeira were a combined 0-for-7 with 5 strikeouts.
Cliff Lee gets the win as he dominated with a complete game masterpiece in which he only allowed 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 10.
C.C. Sabathia struggled early with his pitch count, but still put up a solid outing as he pitched 7 inning & allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while walking three & striking out six.
Game 2 of the 2009 World Series resumes tonight, as Pedro Martinez gets to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium for the first time ever & will face off against A.J. Burnett.
Yankees 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez has a career .291 average in 55 at-bats against Martinez with 1 home run & 4 runs batted in.
