Lakers begin title defense with win over Clippers..

It was a special night at the STAPLES CENTER, as former Laker greats such as Jerry West, Norm Nixon, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy & Michael Cooper were on hand to help watch the raising of the franchise’s 14th NBA Championship banner.

Then, it was time to get down to business.

The Clippers gave a good battle even without injured top overall pick Blake Griffin (out 6-8 weeks with fractured left patella), but Kobe Bryant’s game-high 33 points were too much to overcome as the Lakers won 99-92.

Andrew Bynum had a strong game on his 22nd birthday, as the starting center scored 26 points & grabbed 13 rebounds in 38 minutes of action.

Ron Artest scored 10 points & grabbed 5 rebounds on just 3 of 10 shooting in 40 minutes of play.

Baron Davis led the Clippers with 21 points in a losing effort.
