Mattie T’s Game 5 Recap of the 2009 NBA Finals

Written by on June 14, 2009

The seven year wait is over.

A huge 2nd quarter run fueled the Los Angeles Lakers to a 99-87 win over the Orlando Magic, which clinched the franchise’s 15th championship & a record-setting 10th for head coach Phil Jackson.

Kobe Bryant was named Finals MVP after averaging 32.4 points, 7.5 assists & 5.6 rebounds per game in winning his first title without ex-teammate Shaquille O’Neal.

Now that Phil Jackson has his record-setting 10th championship win as a head coach, it’s time to cement this man as the greatest coach of all-time.

Yes, it is true that he was fornaute enough to coach mega-superstars such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal & Kobe Bryant throughout his career. However, Phil Jackson-coached teams are now an INCREDIBLE 44 and 0 after winning Game 1 of a playoff series.

This is also the first Laker title won without the legendary longtime broadcaster Chick Hearn, who passed away in August of 2002 which was just months after he was behind the mic for Los Angeles’ 14th Championship win. (Lakers swept New Jersey in 4 games)

The Lakers will undoubtely enjoy their 15th title, but will face an upcoming tough decision on soon-to-be free agent forwards Lamar Odom & Trevor Ariza.

The Orlando Magic will have some difficult decisions to make also regarding guard Rafer Alston, forward Hedo Turkoglu & center Marcin Gortat, who all played important roles in their run to the NBA Finals.
