End of an era? Braves release Tom Glavine

The Atlanta Braves pulled a stunning move on Wednesday, as they released 22-year veteran pitcher Tom Glavine in the middle of his comeback attempt.
Glavine hasn’t pitched in a major-league game since August 14th, 2008 & just recently pitched a minor-league game for Atlanta’s Class-A Rome affiliate.
In Tom’s first stint with the Braves, he made 8 All-Star appearences, was part of their 1995 World Series winning team & won both the 1991 & 1998 NL Cy Young awards.
Glavine pitched a career-high 246.2 innings & totaled 192 strikeouts in 1991, but also finished with a 2.47 ERA in 1998 which is also a career-best.
His only home run in 1,323 career at-bats came against Pittsburgh’s John Smiley on August 10th, 1995 during a 2-1 Atlanta win.
If this is it for Glavine, his last major league win will be May 20th, 2008 against the Mets.
In that game, Glavine allowed just 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings pitched during the Braves’ 6-1 win.
In other news, rain ruined a possible historic evening for Randy Johnson as the Giants/Nationals game was called off due to rain from Nationals Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Johnson will start Game 1 of a day/night doubleheader on Thursday, as he will attempt to become the 24th major league pitcher to reach 300 wins & just the sixth lefty overall to accomplish the magical feat.
