Mattie T’s Quick Hits for 5/14/09

Written by on May 14, 2009

What’s up everyone! Mattie T checkin’ in from beautiful & sunny Florida to chime in on a few hot sports topics!

First off, i would like to congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks! On Monday, they finished off  the Vancouver Canucks in 6 games to advance to the Conference Semifinals for the first time since 1992.

The Hawks will face tonight’s Game 7 winner between the Anaheim Ducks & their longtime rival Detroit Red Wings in the Conference Semifinals.

There has been a lot of controversy involving the play-calling near the end of Game 5’s Eastern Conference Semifinals between Boston & Orlando, where the Celtics pulled off 14 straight points to complete a comeback win.

This led to a war of words between Magic star Dwight Howard & his head coach Stan Van Gundy, as Howard barely got any touches down the stretch while Orlando resorted to taking bad perimeter shots.

Howard has already gone on record to say that “We (Orlando) will win this series”. Of course, this will require a crucial Game 6 home win tonight that i’ll be in attendance for! Should be a great game & i’m expecting a big bounceback performance from Dwight, who should have a monster game.

There has also been bad blood in the recently ended Dallas/Denver semifinal series, which started after Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban pointed in the direction of Nuggets’ forward Kenyon Martin’s mother & called her son a “punk”.

Cuban later did apologize to Martin’s mother & offered her a courtside seat “when the series returns to Dallas for Game 6”.

It never got to that point, as Denver eliminated Dallas with a 124-110 win in Game 5, as the Nuggets are now in the Conference Semifinals for the first time since 1985.

Jason Taylor will return to the Miami Dolphins next season after spending  just 1 year with the Washington Redskins.

Taylor’s time with the ‘Skins was brief & disappointing, as he totaled a career-low with 29 tackles & finished with just 3.5 sacks, which is the 2nd-lowest total of his NFL career.

It’s been a good week so far for my Cubs minus Aramis Ramirez, as they are up 6-1 in the 6th today vs. the Padres & appear to be on their way to a 4th straight win!!!

I’ll be back in town on Saturday, but tonight i’ll get to enjoy Game 6 of the Celtics/Magic series at Orlando’s Amway Arena!

Before i sign off though, i’d like to send out condolences to the family of Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich, who found out earlier this week that he was diagnosed with cancer.

Herzlich has Ewing’s Sarcoma, which affects the leg area. Mark has vowed to return playing football after he fights this disease, which doesn’t appear to be life-threatening.
