Cubs release Chad Gaudin on eve of Opening Day..

A key player in last July’s Rich Harden trade will not be with the team come Opening Day 2009.
The Chicago Cubs released righthander Chad Gaudin on Sunday, which ends his brief & disappointing stint with the North Siders.
In just 24 games last season for the Cubs, Gaudin gave up 21 runs in 27 1/3 innings pitched for a 6.26 ERA, which is his highest earned run average among 10 or more appearences.
Despite appearing in the 2nd highest number of innings per Cub relievers in Spring Training, Gaudin gave up 20 runs in 16 2/3 innings pitched for a 10.26 ERA.
Gaudin has a career record of 28-25 in 185 games with a 4.45 ERA in 6 major league seasons with Tampa Bay, Toronto, Oakland & the Cubs.
Rule 5 pick David Patton & 4th-year pro Angel Guzman earned the Cubs’ two vacant bullpen spots, while Jeff Samardzija was optioned down to Triple-A Iowa.
