Written by The Go-To-Man Mattie T. on March 15, 2009
Before i break down where the Illinois Fighting Illini will play & who their first-round opponent will be, let’s look at the four #1 seeds:
Louisville Cardinals (28-5, Big East)
The last time Louisville won 28 games or more, they reached the Final Four in 2005.
Pittsburgh Panthers (28-4, Big East)
The last time Pittsburgh won 28 games or more, it resulted in a Sweet Sixteen appearence in 2007. (Lost to UCLA)
North Carolina Tar Heels (29-4, Atlantic Coast Conference)
Dating back to 1991, the last 6 times North Carolina has won 29 games or more have resulted in Elite 8 appearences (6 Final Four trips in that same timeframe)
Connecticut Huskies (27-4, Big East)
The last time Connecticut won 27 games or more, it resulted in a Elite 8 appearence in 2006.
Bruce Weber’s Fighting Illini are the #5 seed in the South Region & will travel to Portland, OR to face the #12 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
Western Kentucky is a team that could pull off an upset win, as they have won 11 of their last 12 games & did knock off #5 Drake last year as a #12 seed in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament.
Here are my Final Four picks, along with my National Championship Game prediction at Detroit’s Ford Field on April 6th.
