Whitney Young from Chicago defeated Stevenson from Lincolnshire in the state semi-finals game in Peoria, IL. Jalen Brunson from Stevenson scored 56 points, which is a new state record for a point guard. However, Young came out on top in the end 75-68.
Brunson’s 56 points beats the former record by a point. Jim Edmondson, for Hinckley, had 55 points in a 1984 super-sectional game, which was then part of the state tournament (The Intelligencer).
Future Duke player Jahlil Okafor lead Young with 33 points and 14 rebounds.
Whitney Young will face Benet Academy in the class 4A Illinois High School Association title game. The game will take place tonight in Peoria at 8:15PM. Stevenson will play Edwardsville at 6:30 in the third place game. Stevenson took third place last year.
The Whitney Young girls basketball team won this year’s state championship. Young stands one win away from having both the boys and the girls teams win state championships in the same year.
