MOVIE REVIEW: X-Men: Days of Future Past
Written by DJ Special Blend from Chicago on May 23, 2014
X-Men: Days of Future Past promised to be the most epic and best X-Men movie yet. It just may have indeed accomplished that.
Professor X and his proteges are faced with an alternate future. The Sentinels are anti-mutant robots, designed by the anthropologist character Bolivar Trask. They were originally created in Trask’s eyes to supposedly save mankind from mutants. In the alternate future, the Sentinels evolved into machines that could not be stopped.
In this future, the Sentinels are on the verge of defeating the X-Men. Professor X, Magnito, and Wolverine are among the last remaining. They search for and find a mutant that can send one of them back in time to alter the past.
Wolverine is the only one who can endure the time travel. He goes back to attempt to unite a young Professor X and Magnito to stop the course of events that created the unstoppable Sentinels.
Hugh Jackman is the man again as Wolverine. This character gets more and more fascinating with each movie. James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart are very believable as a young Charles Xavier and a fully mature Professor X. Halle Berry’s version of Storm is starting to age a little bit, but she’s still sexy. Weather control is pretty impressive any day.
Time travel is a very difficult topic to deal with. No matter how many times they try, movies and TV shows usually leave huge gaps when they try to tackle this part of science fiction.
However, the X-Men franchise nailed it. There’s a thin line between entertaining your fans, and pissing people off. X-Men: Days of Future Past does an excellent job of tying the entire franchise together. Watch the other X-Men movies in order first to fully appreciate this film.
It is notable that Bolivar Trask is portrayed by ‘a little person’ (Peter Dinklage). This is a change from the original comic book version of the character. Fresh new approaches for this character is nothing new, as Bolivar Trask was African American in X-Men: The Last Stand (portrayed by Bill Duke).
X-Men: Days of Future Past is highly recommended. It is indeed worth paying the extra couple bucks to see the 3-D version if you can afford it. Go out and see this movie right away. If you haven’t seen the previous X-Men movies yet and you’re wondering if you should watch them first… then fire up the on demand options and have a marathon. Then go see this movie. It’s worth it.
This movie is directed by Bryan Singer. The action scenes and special effects are very pleasing.
