What is a podcast?

• A form of distributing multimedia files over the internet for playback on a mobile device or a personal computer.
• Subscribers are automatically notified of updates.
• None subscribers may listen via internet stream through a web browser, or download directly to their computer or mobile device.

Podcast creators distribute content and online material directly to the computers of subscribers. They then view or listen to the content when they please. ‘Pod’ comes from ‘iPod.’ ‘Cast’ comes from ‘broadcast.’ Podcast are powered by a technology called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). This is a file written in the XML format. Listeners and viewers can easily be notified of updates.

In it’s most simple terms, a podcast is a blog with audio or videos regularly attached to the post. If you want to start a podcast, make sure you have the correct equipment. A good place to begin is in the recording gear section of The Guitar Center.
