One of the National League’s best pitchers will be shelved for the entire 2011 season, as St. Louis Cardinals’ ace Adam Wainwright will require Tommy John surgery to repair a ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Wainright has won 39 games in the past two seasons, has pitched over 230+ innings, struck out 210+ batters & more impressively, had 5 complete games in 2010 alone which was a career-high.
He’s finished in the top 3 in NL Cy Young voting in last of the last two seasons, but lost out respectively to Tim Lincecum & Roy Halladay.
The Cardinals will now place Chris Carpenter atop their rotation to start their season opener on March 31st against San Diego.
