After a 25-17 loss that ended their playoff chances, the San Francisco 49ers have fired Mike Singletary on Monday, ending his 2 & a half year run as head coach.
He made immediate headlines in his head coaching debut on October 26th, 2008 after sending Vernon Davis to the locker room during their 34-13 loss to Seattle.
Afterwards, Singletary said that he would rather “play with a ten-man squad than have to deal with an apathetic 11-man squad”.
He was able to guide the team to a 5-4 finish following the firing of Mike Nolan, as the team rewarded him with a 4-year contract worth $10 million.
In 2009, he made a questionable move by benching Shaun Hill in favor of Alex Smith, as San Francisco wound up losing 5 of 7 games during that stretch.
The 49ers lost their first five games of the 2010 season, which included a rare home shutout (22-0) against Tampa Bay, which was their first in 33 years.
Jim Tomsula will take over as interim head coach for the team’s season-finale on Sunday against Arizona.
