Roy Halladay’s going to have a tough time topping an historic postseason debut.
The 33-year old Philadelphia Phillies’ ace became the first pitcher in 54 years to throw a no-hitter in the playoffs, as it highlighted their 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS from Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday evening.
Halladay issued just one walk for the entire game, and needed just 104 pitches to complete the historic feat.
Afterwards, he was very gracious of his dominating performance:
“It’s surreal, it really is. I just wanted to pitch here, to pitch in the postseason. To go out and have a game like that, it’s a dream come true. This is what you come here for. It’s a good team, they know how to win. … It’s been a great year, a fun year, we obviously have a ways to go.”
The Reds’ Edinson Volquez was knocked out of the game after just 1 2/3 innings of work, as he gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in his first playoff start.
Game 2 will be played on Friday evening in Philadelphia, as Bronson Arroyo will pitch against Roy Oswalt.
