In another classic Bears/Packers rivarly duel, Robbie Gould atoned for an earlier field goal miss with a 19-yarder with 4 seconds left, as the Chicago Bears beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 to remain as the only unbeaten team in the NFC.
It was a game that was mostly dominated by the Packers, as they outgained the Bears 379-276 and held a 35:49 to 24:11 edge in time of possession.
Their Achilles heel? Penalties. Eighteen of them, which is the most they have had in 23 years.
One of them took a touchdown away in the 3rd quarter on a Aaron Rodgers pass to Jermichael Finley, as Green Bay wound up emptyhanded after Julius Peppers blocked Mason Crosby’s 37-yard field goal attempt.
Devin Hester gave the Bears’ special teams unit a huge boost to start the 4th quarter, as he took a Tim Masthay punt 62 yards for a touchdown to give Chicago a 14-10 lead.
That is the 12th punt/kickoff return that Hester has returned for a touchdown, which is just 1 shy of tying Brian Mitchell’s NFL record with 13.
The Packers weren’t done, as Aaron Rodgers’ 3-yard scramble gave Green Bay a 17-14 lead with 6:52 left.
Gould tied it up on a 25-yarder with 3:59 left.
Green Bay had invisions of marching downfield on a game-winning drive, but Brian Urlacher made the play of the game as he stripped the ball away from James Jones, as Tim Jennings recovered for a huge Bears takeaway.
Chicago would cash in, as Gould became the hero after hitting a chip-shot 19-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to put the Bears atop first place in the NFC North.
The Bears will travel to the Meadowlands for another prime-time game with the Giants on Sunday evening, while the Packers will host the winless Detroit Lions.
