In a rather surprising move on Wednesday, the Florida Marlins fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, which ends his 3 & a half year run.
He finished with a record of 276 wins & 279 losses, as Florida has already reached out to Bobby Valentine in hopes that he will become the team’s full-time manager for the 2011 season.
Marlins’ left fielder Chris Coghlan backed his former manager, saying that “I enjoyed playing for Fredi. He was a good man, a good manager. He believed in me. He stood for integrity. He was somebody who had your back.”
Gonzalez might not be unemployed as long, as the Atlanta Braves’ former first base coach (2003-06) could be in line to become a successor to Bobby Cox following the 2010 season.
Edwin Rodriguez will take over as interin manager & will make his debut tonight, as Florida is currently in an interleague series against Baltimore.
