Carlos Zambrano’s three-week stint in the bullpen appears to be over.
Chicago Cubs’ manager Lou Piniella announced on Tuesday evening before his team’s 6-2 win over Colorado that his $91.5 million ace will be returning to the starting rotation, noting that “We took a chance that we needed to take.”.
The brief stint didn’t bring back positive results, as Zambrano had an 6.23 ERA in 8 appearences & gave up 3 runs in one outing against Pittsburgh on May 14th.
Sean Marshall is the leading candidate to become the new setup man for closer Carlos Marmol, as the Cubs’ southpaw has notched 27 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings of work with a 2.11 ERA.
The Cubs’ starting pitchers currently rank 9th in the Majors with a 4.07 ERA.
