The Pittsburgh Penguins’ bid to become the first repeat Stanley Cup Champion since the 1996-97 Detroit Red Wings came to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Montreal Canadiens continued their surprising playoff run with a 5-2 win.
The Canadiens controlled Game 7 from start to finish, as they built a 4-0 lead midway through the 2nd period & got a pair of power-play goals from right wing Brian Gionta.
Jaroslav Halak once again did an incredible job, as he saved 37 of 39 potential shots as goalie.
Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill still thinks there are doubters despite Montreal pulling off a 2nd straight impressive upset:
“We played Washington and we were supposed to get killed and we played these guys and we were supposed to get killed. It’s nice to be part of a team that gets things done.”
Montreal will move on to play the winner of the Philadelphia/Boston series in the Eastern Conference Finals, as their Game 7 is scheduled for Friday night.
