On Saturday, Mark Teixeira did something that has only been pulled off just once in the 109th year of the infamous Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, as he homered three times during New York’s 14-3 rout at Fenway Park.
Teixeira hit a solo homer in the 5th off Clay Buchholz, another solo shot in the 7th off Ramon Ramirez & a 2-run homer off position player Jonathan Van Every to complete his first three-homer game since June 22nd, 2008 against Seattle.
He also becomes just the 2nd Yankee ever to have a 3-homer game against the Red Sox, as Lou Gehrig did it on June 23, 1927 which was also at Fenway Park.
After a slow April start that had him batting just .136, Teixeira’s already hitting .400 in 7 games this month.
Teixeira enjoyed his big day Saturday & also had little explanation for his historically slow-starts:
“It felt great. This game will humble you and I was humbled the first few weeks of the season. I don’t know why I have slow starts, but I end up having good seasons.”
The Yankees can go for the Fenway sweep tonight on ESPN, as A.J. Burnett (4-0, 1.99) will pitch against Jon Lester (2-2, 3.93).
