Those Stanley Cup hopes for the NHL’s top scoring team? Wait til’ next year.
This comes after a stunning 2-1 win by the 8th seeded Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday evening, as they held off a late rally by the Washington Capitals, who was a favorite to win the Stanley Cup trophy this June.
Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak had a big say in ending the Capitals’ season, as he stopped 131 of Washington’s 134 shots in the final three games for a mind-boggling 97.8%.
Halak also thought that Montreal proved a lot of doubters wrong.
“Before the series started, no one gave us a chance to win, not even one game. We proved (to) them they were wrong.”
On the other side, 2-time NHL MVP Alexander Ovechkin was in absolute shock after his team’s stunning defeat, which now leaves him with a 1-3 record in all-time Game 7’s:
“I’m in shock right now. I don’t know what to say. It was great going up 3-1 in the series. But it’s only one step. We didn’t do it.”
Montreal will now try to knock off the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, as that Eastern Conference Semifinal series will get underway on Friday evening in Pittsburgh.
