Denard Span got an everyday chance to start in centerfield once Carlos Gomez was dealt in an off-season deal to Milwaukee.
Now, the Minnesota Twins are making sure he’s their centerfielder for years to come.
The two sides agreed to a 5 year, $16.5 million deal on Saturday as Span is just the latest blossoming player from a great Twins’ farm system that has produced the likes of Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer & Jason Kubel.
Span played all three outfield positions last season for Minnesota & showed improvement in just about every major offensive statiscal category, while he tied for the AL lead with 10 steals alongside Boston’s Jacoby Ellsbury.
He’ll have a new ballpark to roam the outfield in now, as the Twins will open up Target Field on April 12th in their home opener against the Boston Red Sox.
Minnesota’s Opening Day game will be in Los Angeles against the Angels on April 5th.
