In an absolute stunner Saturday, 45-year old University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer announced his resignation from the team due to “health reasons”, which will take effect following January 1st’s Sugar Bowl game against Cincinnati.

Earlier this year, Meyer signed a contract extension ($24 million over 6 years) that made him the 3rd highest paid coach in college football, behind only USC’s Pete Carroll & Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis.

Florida has made five consecutive Bowl Game appearences under Meyer, which includes two National Championship wins in 2006 over Ohio State & 2008 over Oklahoma.

The Gators’ Sugar Bowl appearence on January 1st also marks the 19th consecutive year that the school has appeared in a Bowl Game.
