Irish fire Charlie Weis

Charlie Weis will not return to South Bend for a 6th season, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish relieved the 53-year old head coach of his duties today.
When Weis originally joined Notre Dame after the firing of Tyrone Willingham after the 2004 season, he was the first graduate to become head coach of his alma mater since Hugh Devore did it in 1934.
Charlie enjoyed huge success in his first 2 seasons, as the Irish won 19 of 26 games & made back-to-back bowl appearences.
Weis then combined to go just 15-21 over his last 3 seasons, which included a Hawaii Bowl win despite finishing 7-6 in 2008.
It is unsure whether Weis will return to the NFL, as he spent 15 years between the New England Patriots & New York Jets before coming to Notre Dame.
Some of Weis’ most notable protege es include Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn, Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson, Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Harris & Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija.
