Mattie T’s NLCS Recap

Written by on October 22, 2009

Game 1:

A pitcher’s duel through 4 innings between Cole Hamels & Clayton Kershaw quickly turned into a slugfest, as Raul Ibanez’s huge 8th inning 3-run homer lifted Philadelphia to a 8-6 win over Los Angeles.

Carlos Ruiz also added a key 3-run homer in the 5th, which helped knock Kershaw out of the game.

Brad Lidge allowed a 2-out walk to James Loney, but got Ronnie Belliard to hit an outfield flyout to end the game.

Game 2:

Pedro Martinez provided a dazzling performance with a 2-hit shutout through 7 innings, but a late Dodger rally spoiled the fun as Los Angeles pulled off a 2-1 comeback win.

Juan Pierre scored the game-tying run thanks to a critical Chase Utley throwing error, who killed a potential doubleplay with an errant throw to tie the game 1-1.

Andre Ethier then drew a bases-loaded walk from Phillies reliever J.A. Happ to score Russell Martin as the go-ahead run.

Jonathan Broxton then retired Philadelphia in order in the 9th to preserve the win.

Game 3:

Cliff Lee provided a masterful performance on the mound, as he pitched 8 innings of shutout ball & struck out 10 as the Phillies romped the Dodgers 11-0.

Shane Victorino & Ryan Howard both drove in 3 runs apiece, as Raul Ibanez was the only Philadelphia position player without a hit.

Manny Ramirez was the only Dodger with a multi-hit game, as the left fielder went 2-for-3 in defeat.

Game 4:

The Los Angeles Dodgers were just two outs away from a series tie until Jonathan Broxton lost his control on the mound.

Broxton issued a 9th inning walk to Matt Stairs before hitting Carlos Ruiz with a pitch, which set up Jimmy Rollins to be the Game 4 hero.

Rollins lined a 2-run double to the gap in right center to score pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett & Ruiz to give Philadelphia a stunning 5-4 win.

Game 5:

Vicente Padilla couldn’t get past the 3rd inning , as the Phillies rocked him for 6 runs en route to their series-clinching 10-4 win over the Dodgers.

Philadelphia belted out four home runs during the game, which included two from Jayson Werth.

Andre Ethier was the only Dodger with a multi-hit game, as he hit a 1st inning solo homer to briefly give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead.

Congratulations to Charlie Manuel & the Philadelphia Phillies, who are headed to their 2nd straight World Series appearence, which is a first in their 126-year history.

As for Joe Torre’s Los Angeles Dodgers, they failed to make their first World Series appearence since 1988.
