Struggling Cubs, Sox finish up Crosstown Classic today..

Despite the slim mathematical odds of reaching the postseason, both Lou Piniella & Ozzie Guillen are not about to give up on their seasons.
That should at least provide enough interest to baseball fans in Chicago, as the Cubs & White Sox will makeup their originally schedulded game from June 16th on Thursday afternoon from Wrigley Field.
The Cubs would need a miraculous September collapse from the Cardinals to overcome a 10.5 game deficit in the National League Central & are currently 5th in the Wild Card race as they trail Colorado by 6 games.
Their September schedule is favorable, but 7 games still loom against the Cardinals & Giants.
Even if they get on a roll, Tim Lincecum & Matt Cain can end it quickly, as both Giant pitchers are ranked in the top 4 in National League ERA.
Ozzie Guillen’s White Sox have lost 10 of their last 13 games since August 21st & are now 3rd in the American League Central, as they will have to leapfrog both Minnesota & Detroit in hopes of winning the division.
That task could become more difficult now with the recent trade of Jose Contreras & rumblings that Jake Peavy may not be ready to help the Sox until 2010.
They also lost some thunder in their lineup earlier this week with the trade of Jim Thome to the Dodgers, as he ranked 3rd on the Sox with 23 home runs & 2nd with 74 runs batted in.
Rookie righthander Carlos Torres will start for the White Sox on Thursday while the Cubs will counter with veteran righthander Ryan Dempster.
Thursday will be just Dempster’s 5th career start against the South Siders, as he will look for his first win against them since June 22nd, 2008.
