It’s going to feel like the 90’s all over again for Jim Thome.
The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off a late night Monday deal to get Thome from the Chicago White Sox, who is 12th on baseball’s all-time list with 564 home runs.
It will reunite him with ex-teammate Manny Ramirez, as the twosome starred from 1993-2002 together & made 6 postseason appearances while playing in two World Series for the Cleveland Indians. (lost in ’95 to Atlanta & ’97 to Florida).
In a separate deal, the Dodgers also acquired ex-White Sox pitcher Jon Garland from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It’s been a disappointing season for Garland after going 14-8 in ’08, as he sports an 8-11 record in 27 starts this season with a 4.29 ERA.
The Valencia, CA native has only made 1 career Dodger Stadium start, which was on June 3rd as he pitched 6 innings & took the loss despite allowing just 1 run on 4 hits.
In another separate move, the White Sox traded pitcher Jose Contreras to the Colorado Rockies, as Ozzie Guillen’s team will receive minor leaguer Brandon Hynick & cash in return.
Contreras is hoping the switch to a National League park will help turn it around, as he has a 6.97 ERA in 9 starts since the All-Star Break.
