It’s the parents with a child in Iraq who are supposed to worry about bad news, not the other way around.
But when Chris Ferguson stepped off a military plane at Fort Carson, Colo., early Thursday morning after a year’s deployment in Iraq, he was the one learning of tragedy.
His parents, Donnie and Carole Ferguson, had been heading west from their Midlothian home, baby grandson in tow, to welcome their son home. And about 80 miles into Colorado on Interstate 76, his mother lost control of the van and it rolled over. Her husband was killed immediately, according to Colorado State Police.
Carole Ferguson had to be taken by helicopter to a better hospital to be treated for the cuts she suffered, likely from glass when all the windows shattered, Trooper Scott Boskovich said. The child also suffered some injuries.
Chris Ferguson had followed in his father’s Army footsteps, said his mother-in-law, Dawn Frazier.
