The Philadelphia Phillies have decided to add some spice to their rotation as they will attempt to reach the postseason in back-to-back attempts for just the 5th time in their 126 year history.

8-time All Star & 3-time Cy Young award winner Pedro Martinez agreed to a $1 million, 1 year deal with the defending World Champions on Wednesday, but will not be ready to pitch for them until July 30th at the earliest.

With the exception of recently promoted starter J.A. Happ, the Phillies’ rotation has been anything but spectacular this season. However, they still sport a 5 game lead in the NL East over Florida entering Friday’s action.

Martinez’s big-league return could spell the end for Rodrigo Lopez, who has started just 2 games for Philadelphia this season & has a 2-0 record with a 3.18 ERA.

Pedro’s last game pitched prior to this season was on September 25th, 2008 against the Chicago Cubs.

In that game as a member of the New York Mets, Martinez allowed 5 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work, but did strike out  a season-high 9 batters & wound up with a no-decision during the Mets’ 7-6 win.

Pedro Martinez’s best season to date was in 1999 with the Boston Red Sox, as he finished with a 23-4 record & fanned a career-high 313 batters in 213 1/3 innings.
