Written by on April 16, 2009

After a 29-year broadcasting career that saw him color commentate games on all 4 major TV networks & 11 Super Bowls, John Madden has decided to retire.

Madden helped start the annual Thanksgiving “Turkey Leg” award back in 1989 & it is still running to this day.

Former Dallas Cowboys & Arizona Cardinals running back Emmitt Smith holds the record with 5 Turkey Leg awards. (Won in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 & 2002.)

Madden was unique in taking his All-Madden bus cruiser with him around the country to call games, as he had a long-time fear of flying. This reason is why Madden has never done a Pro Bowl game throughout his longtime broadcasting careeer.

Current NFL Network color commentator & NBC Sports “Football Night in America” analyst Cris Collinsworth will replace Madden’s spot during Sunday Night Football for next season.

Madden’s final NFL broadcast was during Super Bowl XLIII, as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 to become the first NFL team with 6 Super Bowl Championships.
