Bears acquire Pro-Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler!

Before i say anything else, major props goes out to DJ Special Blend for beating me to blogging about Cutler. However, i was the first person among my 243 Facebook pals to post  a status about the trade, so i’m happy with that! 🙂

Now, let’s get to what has to be one of the biggest moves the Bears have ever made in franchise history!

Earlier this afternoon, the Chicago Bears acquired 25-year old quarterback Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos & a 2009 fifth-round draft pick.

In exchange, Denver will receive quarterback Kyle Orton plus a 2009 1st round draft pick (18th overall), 3rd round pick & a 2010 1st round draft pick.

Cutler is coming off his best NFL season, as he totaled career highs in passing yards (4,526), passing touchdowns (25), passing yards per game (282.9) & even showed an ability to scramble with his feet, as he rushed for a career-best 57 attempts.

The most impressive stat from last season though, is that Cutler was sacked just 11 times compared to 27 in 2007 despite appearing in all 16 games.

As i take a look at Cutler’s career numbers, he seems to be the type of quarterback that doesn’t finish games particularly strong. His 1st quarter rating starts at 93.0, but later dips down to 82.0 during the 4th quarter.

Cutler has not also shown that he can lead a comeback, as he has just a 79.0 rating with 4,543 passing yards, 59.7% completion rate, and 22 touchdowns compared to 21 interceptions when playing from behind.

One thing that Jay Cutler does do well is thrive under the prime-time lights. In 8 career night games, Cutler has a 100.7 rating with 2,024 passing yards, 15 touchdowns & 7 interceptions.

But even with all of this, the Bears became a better team today with this trade. Chicago has their first Pro Bowl caliber quarterback since Jim McMahon made the 1985 roster which ironically, was the same year that the Bears won their last Super Bowl. 🙂

Cutler has contributed off the field, as he has started his own “Jay Cutler Foundation” and “Dedicated to Diabetes”.

Jay Cutler grew up in Santa Claus, IN & starred as a 3-sport standout (football, basketball & baseball) at Heritage Hills HS in Lincoln City, IN.
