Are you ready for the United Football League?

Written by on March 11, 2009

It will become reality this October, as 4 teams will be created from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas & Orlando.

Players who fail to make NFL rosters during training camps are eligible to join this league, but will also be able to re-join NFL teams at the conclusion of the season.

The 4 head coaches have already been confirmed & will feature 3 men that have won at least one NFL playoff game.

The San Francisco team will be coached by Dennis Green, who spent two different stints with the NFL’s 49ers as their special teams coach (1979) & running backs coach (1986-88).

Green’s career head coaching record in 13 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings & Arizona Cardinals stands at 113-94, with a 4-8 record in postseason play.

The Las Vegas team will be coached by Jim Fassel. Fassel’s return to the West Coast seems fitting since he spent time as an offensive coordinator in the early to mid 90’s with the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos & Arizona Cardinals.

All of this came before his first head coaching stint with the New York Giants in 1997. Fassel’s career record is 58-53-1 with a 2-3 record in postseason play.

Fassel also led the Giants to an appearence in Super Bowl XXXV, but lost 34-7 to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Orlando team will be coached by Jim Haslett, who took the New Orleans Saints to the playoffs in his 1st season there & helped the franchise win their 1st ever postseason game.

But since that 10-6 season in 2000, Haslett’s coaching record is just 37-55, which includes his dismal 2-10 mark as interim head coach of the St. Louis Rams in 2008.

Ted Cottrell will embark on his 1st head coaching job after spending 22 years in the NFL, most recently as defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers’ defense took a dramatic turn for the worse over the past 2 seasons, (ranked 25th in 2008,  14th in 2007) which led to Cottrell’s firing.

All United Football League games during its’ inaugural season will be televised on the Versus network.
