Written by on March 4, 2009

Here is the latest NFL Free Agency Update, as a couple of noteworthy moves have been made in the past couple of days.

Free-agent linebacker Ray Lewis has signed a $22 million, 3 year deal to remain with the Baltimore Ravens.

Lewis has been named to 10 Pro Bowls, won two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards (2000 & 2003) and won MVP of Super Bowl XXXV in his 13 NFL seasons, all with Baltimore.

Baltimore also signed center Matt Birk, who spent the last 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings & made 6 Pro Bowls.

The Denver Broncos have signed their 3rd free agent running back since Friday, as LaMont Jordan agreed to a $2.5 million, 2 year deal.

Jordan has combined to rush for just 1,346 yards in the past 3 seasons with Oakland & New England after rushing for a career-high 1,025 yards in 2002 with the Raiders.

Jordan is the 3rd former ex-Patriot in recent days to sign with the Broncos, as wide receiver Jabar Gaffney & long snapper Lonie Paxton have also joined the team from New England.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed free agent quarterback Damon Huard to an undisclosed deal.

Huard might get a chance to complete alongside Shaun Hill for the starting job at quarterback next season for a 49ers team that missed out acquiring Kurt Warner, who re-signed today for 2 years with Arizona.

The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed free agent running back Cedric Benson to a 2-year deal.

Benson has seen increases in rushing attempts, rushing yards, rushing yards per game, receptions, receiving yards & receiving yards per game in each of his last 3 seasons with Chicago & Cincinnati.

Free agent wide receiver Laveranues Coles has agreed to a $28 million, 4 year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Coles has caught at least 50 receptions for 800 yards or more in each of the 7 seasons that he didn’t miss a single game.

Coles’ free-agent signing with Cincinnati coincides with….

Free agent wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh signing a $40 million, 5 year deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

Houshmanzadeh has been one of the NFL’s more consistent receivers, as he has caught at least 70 receptions for 900 receiving yards or more in each of the last 5 seasons.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent running back Derrick Ward on Tuesday.

Despite splitting time in New York with Brandon Jacobs & Ahmed Bradshaw, Ward totaled career highs in rushing attempts (182), rushing yards (1,025), yards per rush (5.6), receptions (41) & receiving yards (384).

Ward is expected to split time with Earnest Graham next season at running back for Tampa Bay.

Finally, the Buffalo Bills have signed free-agent cornerback Drayton Florence to an undisclosed deal.

Florence failed to record an interception last season for the first time since 2003, which was his rookie season with the San Diego Chargers.

Time for me to finish watching the Cubs/White Sox spring training game from Vegas, as it is tied 5-5 entering the top of the 7th inning!
