CHICAGO, IL – John G. “Red” Kerr passed away on the same day as Norm Van Lier.
Mr. Kerr died after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Born a Chicagoan, his career started with a Public League championship in 1950 with Tilden, and it ended as the Bulls color commentator.
We all got to witness him get final praise and a statue similar to the likes of Mike.
Pippen said Kerr “makes Chicago Bulls basketball what it is,” while Jordan called him “an inspiration to me as a basketball player and as a person.”
Phil Jackson was the Chicago Bulls coach during the six championships.
“We traveled a lot together over the 11 years I was with the Bulls, nine as the head coach,” Jackson said. “It’s with a degree of sadness that we remember him. We knew he was failing, but we didn’t know it would be this quick.”
Rest in peace Johnny Red Kerr (July 17, 1932 – February 26, 2009).
