With the recent releases of New Orleans’ Deuce McAllister & Jacksonville’s Fred Taylor, it’s clear to see that a majority of teams around the NFL are going with running backs that are under the age of 30.
New Orleans will most likely use a combination of 24-year old Pierre Thomas & 23-year old Reggie Bush at running back next season.
McAllister leaves as the Saints’ all-time franchise leader with 6,096 rushing yards & 54 rushing touchdowns.
As for the Jaguars, Fred Taylor’s release means a heavier workload for 23-year old Maurice Jones-Drew, who could be in line for his first career 1,000 yard season.
There are only a handful of 30-something running backs who are still contributing for their respective teams, such as Tampa Bay’s 33-year old Warrick Dunn, New England’s 32-year old Kevin Faulk, Miami’s 31-year old Ricky Williams, & New York Jets’ 31-year old Thomas Jones.
30-year old soon-to-be free agent Edgerrin James also fits this category, even though he rushed for a career-low 514 yards last season.
