Cubs tinkering with moving Soriano out of the leadoff spot?
Written by The Go-To-Man Mattie T. on February 17, 2009
Not even 24 hours has passed since position players & catchers officially reported to Mesa, AZ & the Cubs already have a major issue that could become reality once opening day hits on April 6th in Houston.
Alfonso Soriano is open to moving down in the Cubs’ lineup, which would be the first time since 2005 (Soriano was with the Texas Rangers) that he will not be featured as a leadoff hitter.
In his 2 seasons as a Cub, Soriano is just 6-for-47 (.128) with 12 strikeouts in 14 games when he doesn’t bat leadoff.
Cubs’ starting shortstop Ryan Theriot would be an ideal candidate to bat leadoff, as Theriot has hit 70-for-218 (.321) with 22 strikeouts in 50 games during the past 2 seasons.
It’s all up to Lou Piniella to make the move between now & April 4th.
