Mattie T’s Day 2 Preview of NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix..
Written by The Go-To-Man Mattie T. on February 14, 2009
Before i begin with my All-Star Saturday Night Preview, i’d like to congratulate both Terrell Owens & Kevin Durant!
Owens won MVP of the McDonalds’ Celebrity All-Star Game for the 2nd year in a row, as his game-high 17 points led the East to a 60-57 win over the West.
Owens did credit the “extra rest” for his performance yesterday…so that means he actually enjoyed missing the playoffs? 🙂
The Sophmores defeated the Rookies 122-116 for their 7th consecutive win which produced a 46-point outing by Kevin Durant, who took home MVP honors.
It’s clear to see that Durant has blossomed into an superstar in just his 2nd year in the league & will not have to wait very long to make his 1st apperance on All-Star Sunday.
Michael Beasley led the Rookies in a losing effort with 29 points.
The Bulls’ Derrick Rose finished with 4 points & 7 assists in 20 minutes.
All-Star Saturday Night will begin with a brand-new event: H-O-R-S-E!
I’m sure we have all played it at some point in our lives & have found ways to come up with some crazy shots. We will hope to see some creativity tonight from Memphis’ O.J. Mayo, Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant & Atlanta’s Joe Johnson!
3 of the 4 participants in the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge (Cleveland’s Mo Williams, New Jersey’s Devin Harris & Chicago’s Derrick Rose) are newcomers to the event, with San Antonio’s Tony Parker appearing for the first time since 2003.
Either way, a new winner will be crowned tonight!
Utah’s Deron Williams won last year’s event by completing the obstacle course in a record-timed 25.5 seconds.
Toronto’s Jason Kapono will attempt to become just the 3rd player since Larry Bird (1986-88) & Craig Hodges (1990-92) to win the Three-Point shootout for the 3rd consecutive year.
Out of the Three-Point shootout participants, San Antonio’s Roger Mason has the highest percentage (44.9%)
Then, the most-exciting event of the evening will take place as Orlando’s Dwight Howard will attempt to become the first repeat Slam Dunk contest winner since Jason Richardson did it in 2002 & 2003.
Howard will have some serious competition this year, as New York’s Nate Robinson will look for his 2nd win in 4 years & Portland’s Rudy Fernandez will look to become the first international player to ever win the Dunk Contest.
Also participating tonight will be Denver’s J.R. Smith, who will replace an injured Rudy Gay.
