Has Jameer Nelson taken the “Magic” out of Orlando?
Written by The Go-To-Man Mattie T. on February 12, 2009
Orlando Magic all-star point guard Jameer Nelson suffered a torn labrum injury in his right shoulder on February 2nd against Dallas & was officially ruled out for the season by GM Otis Smith earlier today.
Nelson’s loss is a tremendous blow for an Orlando team that entered Thursday just 3.5 games behind Boston for the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference & homecourt advantage throughout the NBA Playoffs.
Jameer was enjoying the best season of his career before suffering his shoulder injury, as Nelson posted career-highs in points per game (16.7), steals per game (1.2), free-throw percentage (88.7%), three-point field goal percentage (45.3%) & overall field-goal percentage (50.3%).
To fill Nelson’s roster spot, the Magic will rely on 16-year veteran Anthony Johnson, who has never averaged more than 9 points per game during his career.
Orlando acquired Tyronn Lue from the Milwaukee Bucks on February 5th to also help out at point guard. This will be Lue’s 2nd stint with the Magic, as he appeared in 76 games for them during the 2003-04 season.
