Follow Up: Police Searching for Mother of Abandoned Baby

Written by on December 27, 2008

The police have released a photo the baby that was abandoned in a cold stairwell in an apartment building Uptown the other day.

Now, they search for the mother.

I can not imagine what a young woman is going through when these type of things happen.   How hard should a person be punished to set an example that this should not be done, when they are obviously in need of mental help?

Police said the baby was now in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Per the Suntimes: Illinois has a safe-haven law allowing parents or guardians of a baby under seven days old to leave the child with officials at a police station, firehouse or hospital with no questions asked.

According to the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation in Chicago, at least 44 infants have been legally given up in Illinois since the safe-haven law was passed in 2001, but at least another 49 have been unlawfully abandoned.

Of the abandoned babies, about half did not survive.

Let’s hope this one survives.
