Newborn girl found abandoned in Uptown

CHICAGO – A woman opened her apartment door to leave and almost tripped over a newborn girl that someone abandoned in an unheated hallway during the bitter cold Monday night in the North Side’s Uptown neighborhood.

At 8:35 p.m., the infant was discovered outside the woman’s apartment door, which is inside the vestibule of the building on the 1000 block of West Sunnyside Avenue, according to Town Hall District police.

“She opened her door to go out and almost tripped on the way out,’’ police said.

The infant, described by authorities as Hispanic, was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital where she was doing well, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
